Kindle Paperwhite (2018)

Why the Kindle Paperwhite (2018)?

Amazon's upgraded Kindle Paperwhite (2018) is the perfect blend of all of the brand's electronic readers. It combines the affordability and sustainability of the old Paperwhite with the more costly Audible, Bluetooth and Water Resistant features of the Kindle Oasis.

Kindle Paperwhite (2018) - The Design and built

  • Kindle is neither brilliant nor ostentatious. There is no style, no choice of colors - there is only a thin, matte plastic body, light and comfortable to hold, even during long reading sessions.

  • With the Kindle Paperwhite (2018) in the middle of Amazon's range of reading devices, it lacks the modern look of the Kindle Oasis. The Oasis has a metal body and clean lines and curves and although it's appearance is better than Paperwhite's, I prefer the almost invisible nature of the paperwhite.
  • The soft plastic back of Kindle Paperwhite (2018) has slightly curved edges, which allows it to sit comfortably in the palm of the hand. It is also well weighed, with just enough to feel substantial.

  • I have been using Paperwhite for a long time, and throughout this period, it has been put to rough use with other objects in my backpack without picking up even a single scratch. It does not look like a technology requiring protection. Of course, Amazon sells a bunch of colorful cases to dress up the new Kindle Paperwhite (2018). There are also two leather options.

  • One thing you will definitely notice is the ease with which the matte back collects stains and greasy fingerprints. However, it is quite easy to clean, especially as the Kindle Paperwhite (2018) follows the Kindle Oasis by adding an IPX8 waterproof rating. This allows the device to survive for one hour in 2 meters of fresh water.

  • I like having a waterproof electronic reader. Not because I want to leave it underwater for an hour, but to be able to read in the bath or at the edge of a swimming pool, without having to fear of it falling in the water and committing suicide.

  • The Kindle Paperwhite (2018) has a single button: a switch placed on its bottom edge. Besides, a micro-USB connector for charging and a small flashing LED when the device is plugged in.

  • A switch on USB-C - a newer reversible connector, available on most new phones and laptops - would have been welcome. micro-USB seems almost obsolete at this point. Still, you will probably have a lot of cables of this type.

  • More annoying is the lack of page change buttons. Paperwhite has always been only a touchscreen device, and if you want a physical response to switching from one page to another, you will have to pay more for the Kindle Oasis. I much prefer to press a button rather than a screen to turn a page.

Kindle Paperwhite (2018) - Audible software

  • Taken from Audible, the Amazon-owned bookstore is another key feature of Kindle Paperwhite (2018) and the coupling is perfectly logical. Audiobooks that you have at Audible appear next to your manuals and can be downloaded to the device. Access to Audible Store is also possible from the device. As such, if you have both the audiobook and the normal book, you can easily switch between the two by reading or listening.

  • Because Kindle Paperwhite (2018) does not have a speaker or headphone jack, you must connect it to a Bluetooth speaker or wireless headset to listen to a book. During my use of the device, I never encountered any connection or pairing issues - both were strong. Most audiobooks require more storage space than ebooks. To compensate for this, Amazon has increased storage capacity on Paperwhite. The default is now 8 GB (instead of 4 GB), which should be enough for about 10 audiobooks. A 32GB option is also available.

  • If you've ever used a Kindle, you'll immediately feel comfortable with Paperwhite, even if it uses a slightly updated version of the software. The Home screen has been expanded to display more suggestions for classic books and audiobooks, which Amazon's algorithms are for you.

  • There are also new features in the Kindle Paperwhite (2018) that enhance the experience when you read a book. Themes allow you to have a selection of predefined fonts and easily accessible text size in one click. If your Kindle is a shared device, your kids or partner will prefer different settings. For example, you can set a larger font for your children without having to remember the size you used when the device came back into your hands.

  • All Kindle models, including Kindle Paperwhite (2018), are firmly linked to Amazon's library, and the secondary loading of your own content is always a little boring. There is no native support for EPUB files and you will not be able to load books from a library service.

Kindle Paperwhite (2018) - Screen

  • The screen of the 2018 Kindle Paperwhite is now aligned with the front, eliminating the gap that was visible before.

  • This design change puts Kindle Paperwhite (2018) in line with Oasis and the now abandoned Kindle Travel. This not only gives the electronic reader a more modern appearance but also prevents debris from getting stuck in the slot between the screen and the cover. Speaking of glasses, the black border around the 6-inch panel is very important here. Although this gives your thumbs a place to sit, it could have been slightly cut from top to bottom.

  • The screen itself has the same resolution of 300 pixels per inch as the previous Paperwhite, and it remains incredibly sharp and readable. The text is sharp, regardless of its size, and since its E Ink screen, as opposed to the LCD, it is also softer for the eyes. I have trouble reading the text on the screen of an iPad for a long time, but it's not a problem here. The main reason this type of screen is more comfortable for the eyes is the way it is lit. The Kindle Paperwhite (2018) uses a front lighting system with multiple light-emitting diodes illuminating the screen from the sides.

  • It is possible to completely extinguish this light, but in my experience, even if you are in a well-lit room, a small amount of extra light makes it more enjoyable to read. The Kindle Paperwhite (2018) includes a wide selection of brightness settings, the screen can be bright enough for virtually any situation. There is no automatic brightness (a feature reserved for the Kindle Oasis), so this model does not have the ability to automatically adjust the brightness for you.

Kindle Paperwhite (2018) -BatteryLife.

  • The battery life of the Kindle Paperwhite 2018 varies greatly depending on its use. Amazon says you will have several weeks from a single charge, which is acceptable if you read about 30 minutes a day. However, I tend to read a bit more like an hour or an hour and a half. In these conditions, Kindle Paperwhite (2018) loses about 50% of its load in a week. If you have a particularly long day of reading, with the light on and Wi-Fi enabled, you can empty the cell in just a few days.

  • LTE / 4G is another feature that has a significant impact on the life of the battery. The 2018 Kindle Paperwhite has a cellular option that will significantly reduce the life of your battery. If you choose this version, I would advise you to disable cellular connectivity when you are not using it.

  • When Paperwhite runs out of juice, it will only take you 90 minutes to recharge it 100% via micro-USB. However, since you only have one cable, you will need your own adapter or you can connect it to a laptop.

Kindle Paperwhite (2018) :Price and Value

  • Kindle Paperwhite (2018) starts at $ 119.99 / $ 129.99 with 8GB of storage and what Amazon calls "special offers". These are essentially screen-locked ads that can be disabled for £ 10 / $ 10. Starting at £ 149.99 / $ 159.99, you'll get the 32GB model (£ 159.99 / $ 169.99 without ads) and at £ 219.99 / $ 249.99 there's a 4G model from 32 GB without advertising.

Conclusion; Why should you buy the Kindle Paperwhite (2018)?

  • If you want to upgrade an old electronic reader or buy your first device of this type, the Kindle Paperwhite 2018 is the obvious choice. Can you really resist buying it with...
  • Large Screen
  • Enhanced Design
  • Waterproof
  • Audible functionality
  • Lightweight and Durable

It's a lot cheaper than the Oasis, but its screen, waterproof design and Audible support are still beautiful. You do not lose much in areas other than design. The regular Kindle is cheaper but it lacks the lit screen and many high-end features that are present here. For the ultimate reading lights at an impressive price, the Kindle Paperwhite 2018 is hard to beat.
